The directors name is <strong>Gareth Edwards,<\/strong> and he directed a sci-fi film called <em>Monsters<\/em> last year. He will also rewrite the script \u00a0that was written by <strong>David Callaham<\/strong> with another writer, who has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p><em>Monsters<\/em> was Edwards first feature film, so he&#8217;s making a  big leap into the world of big budget filmmaking.\u00a0 There obviously aren&#8217;t any story details, but I imagine it won&#8217;t much different than every other<em> Godzilla <\/em>movie that&#8217;s been made&#8230; a big monster destroying a big city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the press release that Legendary Pictures released earlier this year announcing the Godzilla project:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Burbank, CA \u2013 March 29, 2010 \u2013 Legendary Pictures announced today  that they will develop and produce a new film based on Toho Company\u2019s  famed GODZILLA character.\u00a0 Through the terms of the agreement, Legendary  Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a movie inspired by Toho\u2019s  Godzilla, a franchise the Japanese company created and has nurtured for  over fifty years.<\/p>\n<p>Toho\u2019s GODZILLA franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized  film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television  programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide.\u00a0 Legendary  intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic  manner possible.\u00a0 The company will, in the near future, announce a  filmmaker to helm the film for an intended 2012 release. The film will  fall under the company\u2019s co-production and co-financing deal with Warner  Bros.\u00a0 Toho will distribute the film in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGodzilla is one of the world\u2019s most powerful pop culture icons, and  we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on  this long-loved Toho franchise,\u201d said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of  Legendary. \u201cOur plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans,  would want to see.\u00a0 We intend to do justice to those essential elements  that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant  for as long as it has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGodzilla is a signature Japanese character which we have nurtured  over the years. It is a great honor to reach an agreement with Legendary  Pictures, the parent to many a blockbuster film, and we are delighted  in rebooting the character together to realize its much anticipated  return by fans from all over the world,\u201d comments Hideyuki Takai,  President of Toho Co., Ltd. \u201cWe are anxious to find out where Godzilla\u2019s  new stomping will take us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGodzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which  Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known. Pictures Group.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Legendary, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin,  Roy Lee and Brian Rogers.
