The Road To Wrestlemania begins with the first PPV event of the year. The Royal rumble sets the stage for the WWE Championship match at Wrestlemania. 30 competitors enter the ring at 90 second intervals and the last man standing wins.
The opening contest of the Royal Rumble featured Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt. This was a fantastic opening match that capitalized on Bryan’s popularity and got the crowd excited for the night. This was easily the best match of the night. Both men work very stiff and put a lot into the match. Wyatt got the win and needed momentum. If the rumors are true and Wyatt faces John Cena at Wrestlemania, the booking decision makes sense.
The second contest of the evening was Brock Lesnar vs Big Show. This wasn’t really a match as much as it was a brawl. Lesnar virtually destroyed Big Show with steel chairs before the bell even rang. Once the bell rang, Big Show landed a Knockout Punch, but Lesnar got up very quick from it. Lesnar won with the F5. This was okay at best.
The third match of the night was for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. John Cena got his rematch against Champion Randy Orton. This match was your typical Orton/Cena match. That meaning that the match was boring. If you’ve seen a John Cena/ Randy Orton match, then you’ve seen them all. There was nothing new and both men did their usual thing.
The final match on the card was the 30 Man Royal Rumble. The match was a decent one. There were a few cool things about the match. Kofi Kingston did his usual Rumble antics and made a very long leap from the barricade to avoid being eliminated. Roman Reigns proved to be a beast in the ring. They gave him the nod and had him eliminate 12 competitors, besting Kane’s long standing record of 11. The fans were very unpleased that Daniel Bryan was not in the Rumble. Many predicted him to win, but that went to the returning Batista. That sets up right now what will be Randy Orton vs Batista assuming Orton walks out of Elimination Chamber still the Champion.
Overall, this was a very lackluster event. Wyatt vs Bryan was easily the match of the night and the show went downhill from there. Catch that match if you can and check out the Rumble since it’s the Rumble, other wise you can skip this one.
