In a world of reboots and relaunches, another gets a new look. IDW Publishing has revamped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a new generation. This past week they launched issue #1 of their new series.
IDW has had a strong track record with their library of licensed comic titles. This library includes GI Joe, Transformers, Ghost Busters, and Star Trek. So given that, I had higher expectations than usual with a comic book.
I can gladly say that those expectations were met and then some. TMNT #1 was a very good book. The artwork is superb and original TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman is the head writer on this book. It is not a light cartoony book. This book harkens back to the old days of TMNT comics and looks to take a darker, more serious tone.
The story of the first book sees our heroes (minus Raphael) and Splinter battling a gang of thugs. The fight is overlayed with a monologue from Splinter that flows very nicely with the action being presented. Also mixed in are flashbacks telling the turtles origin. This is a very different origin than we are used to. They are still exposed to the ooze, but the circumstances are different, but I won’t say anything further. Go buy the book to see the details.
The book ends focusing on Raphael. He’s in a bit of a brooding mood and he finds himself a fight.
This was a great way to introduce the book and I am looking forward to next month’s issue. go out and get yourself a copy. This one looks like it will be worth reading monthly.
