Comic Review: IDW GI Joe #1

IDW brings us an all new ongoing GI Joe series. The series takes an interesting approach with the story. GI Joe has been fighting Cobra forces for years now. The government brass believe the Joe team are not as effective as they should be. In an effort to boost the effectiveness of the Joe team, the government decides to make the team’s existence public. Having selected a diverse group representing various aspects of the military, race, and gender, the team is sent into a known Cobra hold as a PR move. Little do the Joes know, Cobra has more control of the target than they are aware of.

This series looks to blend some of the comics seriousness with a bit of the humor from the cartoons. The core team consists of Duke, Shipwreck, Roadblock, Covergirl, Tunnelrat, Quick-Kick, Doc (the daughter of the one from the cartoon). They are also assigned a blogger/reporter under the code name Hashtag. Hashtag is barely out of college and questionably ready to be in a combat situation. There is room for growth of the character though, so I’ll give a wait and see on her.

Shipwreck seemed to shine the most in this one. He gave a lot of the one liners and humor we’re used to seeing out of him. Duke is portrayed much as we’re used to seeing him as well.

All in all, this was a good intro to the series. We are introduced to our first member of the Cobra hierarchy in this issue, but I won’t reveal that one at this time. I recommend picking up this title.  It’s got plenty of potential and I’m interested to see where it goes.
