In brightest day, in blackest night, no Green Lantern news shall escape our sight! New York Comic-Con debuted all the details for Cartoon Network’s upcoming animated adaptaion of Green Lantern, set to debut in late 2011.
The series, helmed by DC Animated Universe mainstay Bruce Timm, Giancarlo Volpe (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Jim Krieg takes the form of CG animation, breaking from Timm’s usual work with 2-D. It follows Hal Jordan and Kilowog in a sort of “Frontier Lanterns” story. The two take to policing the outer rim of the Green Lantern Corps, as very little of the show will actually take place on Earth.
Details were scarce, but the trio still treated us to images of their character models, as well as a short clip used as a test for the project, though no actual footage. Understandable, considering of the 26 episodes scheduled for the first season, 13 have been outlined, 9 written, and only 3 or 4 storyboarded. The clip showcased a brief snippet of Hal and Kilowog fighting off robots side by side, before finding even more beyond the corridor, to which the burlier lantern retorts “I’m getting too old for this.”
We were also treated to some location paintings, and character images for Atrocitus, Zilius Zox, Aya, Carol Ferris and Guardians Sayd, Appa and Ganthet.
Here’s everything we could sqeeze out of them about the series from the panel, and our own interview:
- The Red Lanterns will play a huge part, as well as their skirmishes over jurisdiction with the Corps.
- Kilowog will essentially play Murtaugh to Hal Jordan’s Riggs, of Lethal Weapon fame.
- Keeping the focus on adventures in space, you probably won’t see any other major DC superheroes anytime soon.
- Similarly, in order to respect the movie’s version, the animated series will stay away from Sinestro, but may allude to his existence.
- Considering how many times we’ve seen it in the past few years, don’t expect an origin story.
- The animation won’t shoot for photorealism, being more stylized CG akin to The Incredibles, or even toys.
- Certain questions couldn’t be directly answered for spoilers sake, but it’s safe to say the three had good reason for vaguely answering questions about the appearance of Ch’p, Parallax, Mogo, ring impurities, and whether anyone’s been assigned to guard Earth in Hal’s place.
- They couldn’t say anything about the voice cast just yet, but Bruce indicated there would be several alum from his Justice League Unlimited days.
The series will debut its preview in late 2011 before premiering in the Spring of 2012!
