Activision Blizzard confirmed Call of Duty: Black Ops has set a new five-day sales record, grossing more than $650 million, officially making it the biggest entertainment launch in history. The game made $360 million on launch day in the U.S. and U.K. alone.
Call of Duty is the first entertainment franchise to break two consecutive five-day launch records. The previous record holder, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, made $550 million during its five-day launch. Combined, the games made $1.2 billion in ten days.
And CoD: Black Ops is still breaking records. It broke the record for most players on Xbox Live in one day with over 2.6 million unique players. Over 5.9 million hours were logged playing CoD Black Ops multiplayer for the Xbox 360 by the end of launch day, November 9. Hours that in no way could be spent doing other things, like going outside and math homework. Sony also confirmed that the Black Ops has been an incredible success, “driving unprecedented traffic to the PlayStation Network.”
Black Ops also had the biggest launch of any video game on Amazon.com and GameStop. It also had the highest number of pre-orders for any video game. Minor errors have been corrected with patches for the PC and consoles and are not expected to effect sales. In fact Cod: BO sales are expected to rise as Holiday shopping begins.
