Patrick Stewart and Matt Smith carry Olympic Torch

The Olympic torch is seen as a beacon of hope and a symbol of determination. Before every Olympic games, it makes a seventy day journey around the world from Greece to its destination. This year the destination is London, England. During the torch’s trip, a couple of geek icons were able to be a part of the festivities. Sir Patrick Stewart and Matt Smith took turns in the iconic role as torch bearer.

“I didn’t realize how much it meant until it started,” he said. “I didn’t realize until we gathered here at the school this morning and then went out in the bus and saw the thousands of people on the streets. The sense of exhilaration that that brought. And the evident pleasure in everyone who was witnessing it and feeling that they were sharing in something extraordinary, which they are.” said Stewart of his experience carrying the torch through the streets of London. “I have attended world premieres of big movies that have not had the excitement and the sense of pleasure and pride that people are exhibiting today.”

“It’s a great privilege to be involved. I can’t quite believe people have actually turned up, I thought I would be just be carrying it around, waving to the ducks.” said Smith, known to his fans as The Doctor, star of BBC‘s ‘Doctor Who’. “I’m really excited about the summer of sport we have ahead. It’s wonderful.” Smith’s predecessor on Doctor Who, David Tennant, was featured lighting the Olympic Torch on an episode of the acclaimed series and fans have been clamoring for the good doctor to be a part of the festivities since. That came to pass as Smith carried the torch through Wales as part of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Just as the world unites for the Olympic games, so too can the geek world as Smith and Stewart have shown us this week.
