Matt Smith to keep playing The Doctor for two more years

As Doctor Who approaches its fiftieth anniversary, one of the big questions looming was who would be the Doctor when the time came. Well it looks like we have an anser. Matt Smith, the actor portraying the current incarnation of the titular character, will continue in the role through at least 2014. This will make him the longest tenured Doctor since the series returned to the air in 2005.

The actor contributes his return to the series on writer Stephen Moffat. He called the writing presented to him brilliant.

“His first episode sounds great. It hasn’t been written yet but the idea is as brilliant and as mental as you’d expect from Steven. So there’s a lot to look forward to.

“When Steven was going to pitch the next season to me not long ago, he said, ‘Are you ready to cry?’ ”

Doctor Who returns to the air later this month with the premier of series 7. It will be Smith’s fourth series potraying The Doctor.
