Video Game Addicted Lawyer Suspended Three Years

A Pennsylvania lawyer has been suspended for three years for mishandling cases. The dismissal is being blamed on a video game addiction.

Mathew Eshelman, 43, retreated into the world of video games to fight job stress and problems at home, a state disciplinary panel concluded. “When attempting to conduct his own law practice, he sought refuge from his problems by playing video and computer games with an even greater intensity. He described himself as `addicted’ to the games,” lawyer Howell K. Rosenberg wrote in the 89-page report. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board’s report detailed 17 cases that Eshelman mishandled. They mostly involved bankruptcy, divorce and debt collection cases. He missed deadlines, lost track of client funds and once knowingly lied in a divorce filing , all while ignoring calls from increasingly angry clients.

Now Eshelman himself is claiming to be addicted to video games. Do you believe this is a legitimate issue or do think maybe he’s just using video games as a scapegoat for greater issues that need to be addressed in regards to professionalism and work ethic? Video games have been at the center of a lot of media attention for a long time. They have been called the cause for violent crimes (which have fallen in the past 20 years not risen as claimed), lowering grades in public schools , and various attention span decreasing illnesses. Many people use video games to relieve stress, but sometimes the stress just becomes too great that help must be sought out to help determine the cause and properly alleviate it.

Please weigh in on the issue. Personally, I believe that video games are not the direct cause of many of these problems. They are an outlet in which these problems are manifested, and may be allowed to be discovered. Deep down their are underlying issues that video games are not the direct cause of These deeper emotional and psychological issues are what must be addressed. A game is just a game and can be beneficial in many cases. The military, NASCAR teams, and other professionals use games and simulators as tools for training and development. But at the heart of the issue are real people who have real problems that need to be addressed. I do wish Mr. Eshelman the best as recovers from his stress and any other persoanl problems he may be having.
