For many years, the world of Marvel Comics’ X-Men has dealt with human rights through mutants interacting with human society. Now the tides have turned some. In a more ironic move, Marvel’s legal team is now looking to prove that mutants are not in fact human.
The reason behind the argument is that of money. To be more specific, it’s in the area of import taxes placed on products such as toys. Many foreign countries have different import taxes based on classification for items manufactured and imported to the States. A “dolls” classification is designated as a product representing a human and carries import taxes of around 12%. “Toys”, on the other hand, represent non-humans and are usually only taxed at around 7%. Marvel is wanting to prove that mutants are not humans to be able to get into the lower tax brackets to cut down their costs.
