Production On Akira Halted

The live action adaptation of the popular anime movie Akira has gone through a number of production delays. That trend continues as another delay has hit the film. Warner Bros. has now completely halted production on the film. The crew currently working in Vancouver has been told to halt production and go home.

The film, which is to be an Americanized retelling of the Japanese manga turned movie written by Katsuhiro Otomo. It will be set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The story is about a young man who discovers he has psychic powers and is then chased down by both the military his brother, who is the leader of a motorcycle gang.

The main concerns lie in budget and casting. Previous stories have come out of numerous people accepting and then backing out of roles in the movie for various reasons including prior production delays causing schedule conflicts with actors other films. The other concern is the budget. Currently the film has a $90 million budget attached to it, but the studio is looking to bring that down to somewhere between $60 and $70 million. Warner Bros. is going to completely re-evaluate the project, including the current script to make changes to help their casting problems and save money wherever possible.
